Yara, 24 years old, is from Syria. She’s been in The Netherlands for four months and is waiting for her asylum procedure to begin. Yara is an artist and went to art school in Damascus. She describes how the war in Syria gradually crept in to daily life, ultimately taking it over entirely. It became so oppressive that “nothing was possible any more, even art ceased to exist.” She had no choice but to flee. Now she paints in a studio in Amsterdam, waiting for a residency permit.
And she’s starting to enjoy her freedom, and the blue skies.
